The Millpond

The Millpond

The old millpond at the village of Stoke Gabriel cascades into the adjoining River Dart in Devon.

I had been walking up the river bank on a beautiful day in April and sat down at the end of the dam with the dappled sunlight playing through the overhead trees.

I got to thinking how nicely the branches framed the skyline on the village with it’s ancient 15th century parish church on the skyline, so decided to take a few images.

Beautiful, beautiful shot. You feel as though you’re right in the scene. Looking at your wonderful photos make me very homesick. As children, we used to spend holidays around Mevagissy and Polperro. Last time home, spent time in East Looe and Lyme Regis. Such a beautiful area.

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you so much Nan, I’m so pleased you like it, I am fortunate to live near to so many beautiful places in the Westcountry, I did go to Lyme Regis in the Summer but not very successful that day with the camera,

This is one of those places that I had completely forgotten until seeing the title! Now it all comes flooding back to me by way of this stunning photo. I used to love this little place so this is going straight into my favourites. The framing is wonderful, of course and the low angle of shot takes us right into the scene. So many of us fall down by keeping the camera up at head height all the time but you vary your angles and it really does make all the difference. Super photo Rod. All the best, Peter

  • rodsfotos replied

So pleased it brought back a few memories for you Peter, there used to be two great old pubs in the village the Church House is still going strong but my favourite the Victoria and Albert closed a few years ago and it is now several small cottages, that saddened me, I enjoyed many good meals and evenings there over the years, many thanks my friend,
    Regards, Rod.

A very good take here Rod nice and clear but i wish you could send that water over here we are desperate

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much Dave, I do sincerely hope the drought situation improves for you in the near future, it’s quite worrying how the climate of Mother Earth has changed to extremes over recent years, I feel we all need to take more notice about what we all can do to minimise global warming, it’s becoming too much of a reality to ignore,
    Regards, Rod.

Beautiful shot, Rod. The cascading water below and the branches above make it “picture perfect.”

  • rodsfotos replied

Thanks so much Gerry, the little cascading waterfall was barely 6 feet wide, a bit of perspective trickery but I was pleased with the result even if I did get a bit wet taking this one,
    Regards, Rod.

Like the viewpoint for this that makes it look as though you’re in the water. Great foreground with the falling water diagonally leading you in.

  • rodsfotos replied

Looks can often be a true reflection of reality Stuart, it was not my wish or intention but I did end up with one foot deeply submerged, LOL.
I had the tripod fully splayed in an effort to get down to just above water level and got a bit too wrapped up in the composition to stay dry, how we suffer for our art, thanks so much,
    Regards, Rod.

beautiful image..lovely place so well photographed ! At first I did not like the branches on top, but they bring life in the picture. So no objections :-)

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much for the kind comment Dana and I welcome your input regarding the overhead branches, I wasn’t too sure about them myself at first but realised it helps the viewer see I was under a tree, hence the dappled sunlight and shadow on the foreground,
