Market Day at Totnes
Just a street scene taken on Market Day in the ancient Historic Borough of Totnes in Devon.
I lived in Totnes for about 30 years and loved the atmosphere in the narrow streets and the ancient timber framed buildings, most of which are over 500 years old, seem to lean in every direction, but all add to the character.
In recent years Totnes has earned the title of Alternative Capital of the UK, not because of the population which is under 10,000 but a large influx of hippy types and green environment followers seemed to have moved to the town.
A market has been held in the town for over 1000 years and the modern day market day can be most enjoyable and filled with atmosphere,
In Roman times, Totnes was one of the largest towns in population and at one time even minted it’s own currency, thankfully it didn’t grow as fast as all the other towns in numbers.

Dear old Totnes. I’ve visited that market a few times (also the one at Newton Abbot) This shot particularly appeals to me because it is not the normal scene one gets in a photo of Totnes. This is really more how I remember it. Super photo Rod and a keeper for me, for sure. There used to be a huge place called Trago Mills out here somewhere (or was that closer to Newton Abbot?) The guy was always using a large space in his adverts to belittle the government of the day – remember that? Are they still going? We used to have friends out here who were long time Totnes residents but we seem to have lost touch in recent times. Great to see this one Rod. Best wishes, Peter
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Peter, I tried to include the typical old town centre architecture and a bit of the market day atmosphere in the composition.
Yes Trago Mills are still a thriving business on the far side of Newton Abbot, the son now runs the business and the same type of adverts knocking the EU and the Government of the day,(Nothing changes).they have really gone upmarket and are a massive business these days,
Regards, Rod.

I rmember this well. My sister lives at Rattery, which is just down the road from Totnes, while Mother is in Torquay. We grew up visiting Totnes (Granny lived there) and of course Newton Abbot, Trago, Buckfastleigh etc. This is really a delightful walk down memory lane. Apart from that it is a great photo.

I’ve never been to this area, I think I should some day …

I hope you can make it down this way before too long Tom, I’m sure you’d enjoy a holiday in the Westcountry, so much more interesting to visit places like Totnes than to sit on some of our overcrowded beaches in my opinion, many thanks,

Hey there Rod, I really appreciate your bringing the scenes of the South West to life, it’s great to see good old Totnes once again, it seems like ages but it’s only a couple of months. I ilke the way you’ve captured the scene. Blessings, Don.

This picture reminds me of George St., St. John’s, Newfoundland. You should google George Street, St. John’s! Uncanny! Very beautful! You sure do have excellent work!
St. John’s is the oldest city in North America.
rodsfotos replied
Thanks so much Gail, I just checked it out and found a page with 4 street scenes in it, it is very much alike,
Regards, Rod.

Wonderful image, Rod!!! All the character in the world!!! It’s what I love most about Great Britain and Europe … scratch the dirt there and you get centuries and centuries and centuries of history … lives and loves … scratch the dirt here and you get more dirt, lol!!!! And the beauty of it all is talented individuals like yourself who recognize what so many of we Americans hunger for!!! More please!!!!!
rodsfotos replied
I loved the thirty years I lived in this old town Lois and would go back in a flash but st least I still live near enough to go back regularly with the camera, more will follow in time, many thanks my friend,

There must be a lot of history in this old town and I love the leaning buildings. It does look like a busy place where people enjoy going. This is a fine shot and gives me a taste of Totnes. A market that has been held for 1000 years is really something.
rodsfotos replied 28 days ago
Thank-you very much Carol, I still go back to Totnes sometimes on market day, the atmosphere is wonderful, yes the history of the town is amazing, at one time they even had it’s nown mint and currency, I enjoyed the years I lived there and often wish I still did,
Regards, Rod.
