The Good Old Days

Taken at Cockington Village just outside Torquay in Devon UK.

The ancient village is a real step back in time for the visitor and most of the centuries old houses have thatched roofs like this one, the Higher Lodge.

Ponies and traps are available all through the Summer months for a scenic trip round the village and the friendly drivers are full of information about the historic village.

A briiliant image as always Rod, Does the road have an adverse camber, or is the horse and cart being blown away ? – Colin

  • rodsfotos replied

Thanks very much Colin, I would say this bit of road slopes in all directions, it is only a drive up to the Manor House at the top of the village and is not used for cars,
    Regards, Rod.

Looks like a very pretty place Rod and I like the carthorse although he looks a bit tired!

  • rodsfotos replied

They had just come up a steep incline to this point Jacqi and have since stopped using this route because it was a bit too hard on the horses and now they go a longer and more scenic trip round the lakes to get up to this point, many thanks,

    DottieDees

This is truly amazing…Just curious…how long did a thatched roof last….? Would love to visit some day!!

  • rodsfotos replied

Thatched roofs can last up to 40 years or more but need to be repaired every now and then, they are quite expensive to replace but they add so much character to an old building that I think they are more than worth the expense, many thanks Dottie,
    Regards, Rod.

This is really neat Rod. Thatched roofs are so interesting and we saw only one when we toured Scotland. This is a great capture. I also like the way you display a larger version of the photo further down on the page. Great idea.
    Sincerely, Catherine

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you so much Catherine, we are blessed with having so many old world thatched buildings in this area, this old village is only about ten minutes from where I live and I’d guess three quarters of the cottages have thatched roofs,
    Regards, Rod.

What a quaint place!!! We have a miniature village set up among lovely gardens here in Australia called Cockington Green – now I know where the inspiration came from!!! Beautifully shot and presented Rod.

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much Rosalie, yes I have seen quite a few images of the Cockington Green model village and it is quite an accurate copy of the layout and buildings in part of Cockington village, I can only guess that the person who made it originated from Devon and it is so obviously a labour of love for the charm of the original village,
    Regards, Rod.

  • rodsfotos replied

Thanks so much Trudi, the old village is in a valley and although minutes from our home town which is a large seaside holiday resort, there is no sign of it’s close proximity to modern life,

Hi Rod. This is your best yet from Cockington and that is saying something! From the positioning of the horse and carriage to the richness of the colours the whole scene is pure magic and to my eyes really highlights one of the major differences between RB and you-know-where. But once again I did not get notification that you had posted this so have taken the precaution of visiting your home page every couple of days to make sure I don’t miss anything. Best wishes, Peter

  • rodsfotos replied

Hello Peter, thank-you so much my friend, as you know, I have quite some number of photographs from Cockington but this one was always one I liked myself, I think partly, because they no longer go past this little cottage with the carriage rides so I can never repeat it,
    Regards, Rod.

I’m a bit surprised that there are so many thatched roofs in your area. However, the tour guide in Ireland told us there are not many thatched roofs in Ireland anymore because all the thatchers went to England.

  • Wildwings

    Wildwings

Such a beautiful capture. The clarity of details is perfect. I hope that they never loose the art of building thatched roofs. It’s unbelievable that they last so long. This looks like a “postcard” village. Lots of nostalgia. I enjoyed your work. You have many harbor shots that I thought were lovely.

  • rodsfotos replied

The whole village is just like this with ancient thatched cottages and is a popular tourist attraction but still a thriving community in it’s own rights.
Thank-you so much for your kind comment,

Perfect timing on this one, Rod!!!! Were you just strolling along and found yourself in front of this perfect thatched cottage when the cart rolled by???? WOWZER!!!! You have magic in you, my boy!!!!! Don’t know how I missed this one before .. not like me to pass up a ride in a pony cart!!!!!!! I LOVE it!!!!!

  • rodsfotos replied

During the Summer the pony rides go round every half hour or so but this one appeals to me more simply because they changed the route round the village and no longer pass the Higher Lodge, I gave the driver a print of this one and it is on his lounge wall at home,so he is normally pleased to stop and pose at the right moment, thanks again dear Lois,
    Regards, Rod.

  • Lois Bryan

    Lois Bryan

Oh, wonderful!! I’m so glad you gave the driver a copy!!!! I bet he was sooo thrilled!!! Good for you!!!

  • rodsfotos replied

His wife was ill in the hospital I work in and she too drives a pony and trap round the village so I asked her if they’d like a print, it stayed by her bedside and they often remind me that it is now framed in their lounge, so it gave me pleasure to know how they appreciated it.
