The River Dart Estuary.

The River Dart Estuary.

The last mile or so of the mighty River Dart in Devon UK., taken a couple of weeks ago from an elevated viewpoint some 250 feet above the river at the ancient historic port of Dartmouth.

As you look towards the estuary as the river narrows the ancient fortified Kingswear and Dartmouth castles sit each side of the river, still armed with the cannon that protected the port back in Elizabethan times during the war against the Spanish.

Not sure how much of the detail you can appreciate at this viewing resolution but I was amazed at the detail in that patchwork of farming fields more than a mile away when viewed full size.

A lovely shot, makes you wanna go there Rod, plenty of detail can be seen on the enlarged version mate….

  • rodsfotos replied

Thanks so much Jason, just wasn’t sure how the detail in a wider view would show at this low viewing resolution,
    Regards, Rod.

it’s really a gorgeous view Rod, the fields look like a patchwork quilt and the water is such a soft blue blue,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,very nice scenic

  • rodsfotos replied

Thanks so much Lynda, I’m pleased you described the fields as like a patchwork quilt, it’s just the way I always feel when I see them from this kind of distance,
    Regards, Rod.

absolutely wonderful place and great capture, I love this place, have sailed up here a few times, wonderful!!!! Agatha Christie used to live in a house whose garden went right down to the Dart. Saw her one day. Huge ships go up here laden with wood on the spring tides, it isn’t deep enough at any other time. The bore is absolutely fantastic to see. hugsxxx

  • rodsfotos replied

My word Hilary, you are well informed, it is indeed a beautiful river and the trip up to Totnes is a must do on a fine Summer’s day, the timber yard at Totnes has now closed so we don’t get those big cargo boats anymore,it must have been a thrill to see Agatha Christie in her garden at Greenaway House,
    Regards, Rod.

Wonderful view Rod that shows off England’s green and pleasant land to perfection. Does the old chain ferry still run across the river? I concur with Jason that the detail in those fields is excellent. Excellent photo. Best wishes, Peter

  • rodsfotos replied

Thanks so much Peter, yes the chain ferry is still there and the lower one with the tugs tied to floating pontoons as well, they must be some age now,
    Regards, Rod.

Great shot Rod, British is best, there is so much detail in this shot, and it is a great place to see the Red Arrows – Colin

  • rodsfotos replied

Thanks so much Colin, funny you should say Red Arrows, but this is the field we were shepherded into when they were here this year and the mist dropped dramatically cancelling the display, but I saw enough of the view to make me want to go back on a clearer day,
    Regards, Rod.

So lovely! Amazing detail to become totally absorbed in.
Is that direct access to the English Channel then Rod? I’d imagine it would see some fairly rugged weather on occasion. It’s quite exposed isn’t it?

  • rodsfotos replied

The estuary opens into a 40 mile wide bay,(Lyme Bay) and enjoys a little protection from the ravages of storms in the English channel but all parts of the Southwest coast are often battered during a storm with it being next to the open Atlantic many thanks Robyn,
    Regards, Rod.

  • rodsfotos replied

  • rodsfotos replied

Many thanks again Catherine, I can imagine the view from a plane looking down on this would be one of those things locked in your memory.
This area of Devon is known as The South Hams and something I find particulary attractive about it is thge way the farmland comes right down almost to the clifftops, I never tire of seeing it,
