Buckfast Abbey, Devon.
The current abbey was built by an order of Benedictine monks and was completed less than a hundred years ago though an abbey has stood on this site for over 1000 years.
Situated in the small village of Buckfast below the foothills of the Dartmoor National Park, over recent years a strong commercial side has evolved in the abbey with regular visitors, gift shops and a restaurant.
World famous for the production and sale of their fortified wine and honey from a unique strain of honey bees which goes towards the upkeep and education of children in the local school amongst many other things.
Many of the locals now nickname the abbey Fast Buck Abbey but the money is well spent within the local community and a visit is more than worthwhile.
Taken in warm evening light.

Great image Rod. We visited Buckfastleigh on several occasions when our friends lived there but we never managed to get to the abbey. There’s still time though

Beautiful light and colours Rod,what a lovely abbey and thanks also for the history ,very interesting…......Trudi
rodsfotos replied
Thanks so much Trudi, there are normally a lot of people walking round the grounds but I found out that on a Sunday when the evening service is on everyone disappears,
Regards, Rod.
Magee
I’m with Trudi here Rod! You’ve chosen a perfect time to click. The lighting is stunning, and gives such warmth to the colours of the abbey, and it’s all as neat as a pin. Doesn’t looke to even be so much as a stray leaf on the ground. A very visually pleasing image. Well done!
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Robyn, light direction and intensity can be so vital, just wish we got better weather than we do over here in the UK. if it’s like this I never complain,
Regards, Rod.
Judy Clark
This is absolutely fantastic, and I love all the detail on the Abbey. How you ever got the larger image posted is beyond me!
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Judy, Peter was the one who told me how to put on a larger view then someone else tried to help but it wouldn’t load at first but it’s quite easy once you finally get it working, I find new things harder to pick up these days if you know what I mean,
Regards, Rod.

Marvellous photo Rod of a place I remember very well. We had a young friend who used to work there so got to visit on three or four occasions. I don’t know how I missed seeing this earlier – nothing showed up that you had posted anything and I only found this by visiting your home page because I had a feeling I was missing out. All best wishes, Peter
rodsfotos replied
So pleased it brought back pleasant memories for you Peter, this was taken in the Summer with the D100, I will probably have to wait till next year to get it like this with the new camera, many thanks Peter,
Regards, Rod.
DonDavisUK
A Ha! I recognise that view and the position too. I like the way you’ve included the ballards in the picture too. Such a wonderful peaceful place, especially if you can get into the Monks private walks. We were privilleged to do so once when on an Ordination retreat in 1994. We got caught swimming in the river by the Archdeacon of Barnstaple, he just smiled though:)LOL. We love going here as a family too. Did you managed to get a photo of the excellent window at the back of the church? God bless, and love this great shot Rod, the light is just magical and that sky is fantastic. Don.
rodsfotos replied
Just took a few from this viewpoint in the Summer and found out that during the Sunday evening service the crowds leave the outside clear so a better type of image comes through, thanks so much Don,
Regards, Rod.
BarbaraManis

OH Rod I know this so well, I love Devon, & to think we’re neighbours is great.
You have captured this beautiful building so well.
great shot.
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Malcolm, I used to pass here quite often when I lived in Totnes but nowadays my visits are probably few and far between which is a shame because there are so many photo opportunites of selective architecture in the Abbey,
Regards, Rod.
SandraRos
Thank you so much for showing it “large” that really shows the beauty of this photograph. Very well done Rod ! ! This is beautiful and the info is great
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Sandra, I do prefer to view all images larger and it saves the viewer from hitting the tab,
Regards, Rod.

David Parkin
Your photography is up there with the best I have ever seen Rod.
This image is so beautiful, the colours are so gorgeous and vibrant . . . and framing the building between the trees, a master stoke.
rodsfotos replied
You are too kind my friend, I had to learn the hard way in 40 years of film cameras, digital cameras are the best thing that’s happened since I took up photography, I still approach each shot as if I was paying for film and processing.
I remember my late friend telling me it was pointless travelling all over the place taking countless shots and rejecting them afterwards, so it’s tripod, filters and bracket each shot to get the best exposure for me, my editing skills in PS are so limited, I have to rely on getting it as near as dammit on camera, here endeth my preaching, lol., thanks again David,
Regards, Rod.
Lois Bryan
I’m smiling ear to ear … just read your note to David Parkin … and it’s that kind of dedication on your part that creates these masterworks!!!!!! I wonder if you have any idea how you inspire others with your magic!!! This one, as with ALL your others, has that crispness and snap that I honestly think I’d recognize anywhere!!!! I’m pretty sure we can count the bricks in this particular shot, Rod!!!! Not to mention the glorious color and the sharp light and shadow!!!! AHHHH!!!!
rodsfotos replied
And I’m smiling too Lois, only hope David is as well, lol., when you get as addicted as I am to photography it’s so easy to start going on and on and on and on and on and on, I’m sure he understands or at least I hope he does, many thanks my friend,
Regards, Rod.
Lois Bryan
... um … I’m there!!!! When my poor husband, to be polite, asks a question about my photography I have to keep myself in the present moment … when that poor boy glazes over I’m so afraid he’ll pass right out on the floor!!! HHAHAHA!!! Yes, I too go on and on and on and on and on!!!!! How lovely that we can come here and have conversations on photography with other camera-happy goof-balls like ourselves!!!!
Tom Gomez
Wonderful shot of this lovely Abbey …
The only thing I have against Buckfast Abbey is the tonic wine they produce (the buckie) which causes great problems especially in and around the Glasgow area. See the Wikipedia Buckfast Tonic Wine entry.
rodsfotos replied
Thanks so much Tom, the link does make disturbing reading though the worse cases are those down and outs who mix it with meths, I must say I’ve never tried it myself but I seldom drink these days,
Regards, Rod.

awesome shot…I was in the UK for awhile and loved it there…I miss it!!! My friend that lives there took me all over and we took a bunch of photos. Her and I had a lot of fun to the places we went and I love castles. We ate dinner one night at the Bishops castle which was cool!!! :-)

Thank-you very much Dawn, I’m so pleased you have so many happy memories of your visit to the UK., hopefully you’ll return to see the place again before too long,

Ah so that’s where the wine comes from. There’s a lot of devoted worshipers to that stuff up in Scotland. Not me, but beautiful capture though!
rodsfotos replied
Buckie has indeed become a popular drink in Glasgow in particular, shame on me having never tried it but I’m told it’s very strong, many thanks Roddy,
Regards, Rod.
Mark Tisdale
Very balanced image and great light!
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Mark, I took this one with the old Nikon D100 and went back a few weeks ago with it’s replacement D300 but the light doesn’t get to this side of the Abbey till around Midsummer, so that’s another assignment in the diary,
Regards, Rod.
