Cathedral Ceiling
Exeter’s beautiful 1000 year old cathedral has the longest continually vaulted ceilng in the World.
I carefully composed this image of a short section of the vaulted ceiling to be as symmetrical as possible and give a pleasing patternation created by the lines of the gilt decorated structural beams.
As a footnote to anyone else trying this kind of composition, you get quite a bit of attention from others when you spend over an hour laying on your back in such a sacred building trying to get that special image.

Well done Rod…...very brave and very well worth the back ache!
rodsfotos replied
I can still feel that back pain Sonia but probably worth it, thanks so much,
Regards, Rod.
jell
such precise composition. Well worth all the stares Jell
rodsfotos replied
I must have taken over 100 images of it with slight adjustments to both composition and exposure and this was the only one that really stood out to me, many thanks Jell,
Regards, Rod.
LYN EVANS
THUD!!!. That’s me falling on the floor Rod.
What an amazing capture. I can’t believe the clarity. It’s like you can reach out and touch it.
STUNNING capture.
rodsfotos replied
Thanks so much Lyn, the best bit about laying on the floor for a photograph is that you can’t fall, and I’m sure you don’t need reminding.
I went to Dawlish a couple of days ago but nothing much in the way of opportunities in the stream there but believe me, you were very much on my mind during my visit,
Regards, Rod.
Antanas
Great idea and well done
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Antanas,
Regards, Rod.

I love this perspective and capture Rod. The architecture here is stunning, as is the way you’ve captured it. It has that spider web appeal to it. Wonderful. Cheers, S.
rodsfotos replied
Love that comparison to a spider’s web effect Sandra,it is indeed a complex geometry of ancient architecture, they knew how to build them in those days many thanks my friend,
Regards, Rod.
missmoneypenny
Extremely well done – lovely work

Bet the lady wasn’t your wife LOL she probably walked off and left you to look foolish haha!!
SandraRos
Rod this was worth every min that you spent lying on your back ! Go for it babe you got a stunning and great photograph If I could get such wonderful results like this I will ly on my back as well !! LOL
rodsfotos replied
I’d love to see myself as a trend setter with an army of photographers laying on their backs trying to get that original composition, lol., now if you could get a candid photo of them that would be something soooo funny, many thanks Sandra, I’m SMILING,
Regards, Rod.
SandraRos
LOL my friend just let me know when you are going to take us for lessons ….............. maybe you can call it “Taking photo’s on your back” I will make sure I come over to your side of the pond to join in this master class

Lois Bryan
Holy WOWZER, Rod!!!! I am ALL admiration!!!!! I’m so glad you added that last paragraph about the funny looks from people as you composed the shot .. because that is exactly what was going through my head while I looked at the image!!!!! I’ve really got to hand it to you … you take such fabulous care in what you do … I hate to admit it, but I’d probably have been too intimidated to take the measures you described. I’d have pointed the camera UP … and crossed my fingers and pushed the button …about a dozen times … hoping that somewhere in that dozen was a shot that I could crop into a semblance of something recognizable. YOU, young man, are my HERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you so much Lois, I did have the camera on a low spread out tripod so lying on the floor was my only option to get to the viewfinder, it must have been a hoot for most of the onlookers and believe me there were quite a few of them by the time I’d finished,
Regards, Rod.
Lois Bryan
... oh and you’re right … definitely worth the “view larger”!!!!!
Lois Bryan
You knoooooow .. I think I’ve seen a doo-hickey … that is like a periscope … that you can use on your camera so you can see thru the view finder in odd situations like that … have you ever heard of things like that or am I dreaming again??? That would be something to look into if you were to make a habit of these amazing kinds of shots!!
rodsfotos replied
I have a bracket that fits on to mine to allow for tricky positions but it is far too low to the floor for my liking, it can also be used for off-camera flash
DonDavisUK
Hey there Rod, this is a great capture. I really like the symetry in this shot and the gold and white work marvellously in this shot. Don.
rodsfotos replied
Thanks so much Don, every time I visit the cathedral I always notice so many beautiful architectural details that I hadn’t previously seen, it is a truly amazing building as well as the obvious religious standing and history that it has,
Regards, Rod.
BarbaraManis
I would have loved to be one of those people watching you lying on the floor trying to get this shot. Amazing work, Rod. Everythng about it is wonderful!
rodsfotos replied
There was a rime when I wouldn’t have dared do that sort of thing especially in a cathedral but they do encourage photographers here so long as you pay a £5 fee for the right to use your camera inside,it goes towards the massive upkeep of the cathedral, many thanks Barbara,
Regards, Rod.
Astrid Pardew
It was well wrth your effort Rod. This is an amzing capture. An instant fav.

rodsfotos replied

Regards, Rod.
Renee Dawson
Well Rod all your efforts certainly paid off. This is an absolutely stunning image. I embarassed my kids this summer when I went right down on my belly in the local park (on the walkway) to get a picture of a nice big water snake…lol
rodsfotos replied
Thanks so much Renee, only us photographers understand what we have to do irrespective of who’s looking, your kids surely admired you even if they did seem ambarassed at he time,

jacqi
It was well worth the effort Rod for this perfect capture of a wonderful ceiling. Think of the guy who painted it, he had to take care not to fall!
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Jacqi, the costs of maintaining the cathedral are astronomical, the ceiling is almost 100 metres long and about 25 metres high, so they welcome photographers inside who are asked for a £5 donation towards the upkeep,
Regards, Rod.

Jan Bickerton
Rod, this is an outstanding photo of what I think of as MY cathedral in Exeter. It is a wonderful building and you have captured its glory.
I was in Torquay last week, taking my camera for a walk. I was impressed with the big hot air balloon, you’d get some great shots of the coast and town from 400 feet up!
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Jan.
The cathedral is an architectural photographer’s dream with limitless opportunities, I normally visit about once a year with the camera.
Torquay’s balloon is quite a topical subject in the town with many wanting it to be taken away for fear that it distracts motorists but it would indeed be an interesting photo shoot from 400feet up in the right weather conditions,
Regards, Rod.
Linda Syms
Amazing great shot.
rodsfotos replied
Thanks so much Linda, I’m sure I could spend days inside this old cathedral and never run out of exciting opportunities, if you are ever down this way, please pay it a visit with your camera of course,
Regards, Rod.
Sharon Mau
It is so perfectly symmetrical Rod, I love the wonderful colours and patterns!!
rodsfotos replied

Regards, Rod.

Regards, Rod.
Steve Chapple
You certainly have an eye for that point of difference. The almost abstract feel of great architecture makes this stand out!
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Steve, I had been planning this one for some time and took so many images of it that day, this was the only one that came near to what I wanted,
Regards, Rod.

I add this picture to my favourites.
Good evening Rod !
Mes amitiés, Daffo
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you so much again Daffo, I admire the ancient builders and craftsmen who built these wonderful ancient cathedrals so many hundreds of years ago, they certainly knew more in those days than many people might believe, this one in Exeter has so many things of interest in the interior, I never tire of visiting it,
Regards, Rod.
CarolM
Wow! Very eye catching image. It must be a beautiful cathedral if this is just a part of the ceiling. Stunning capture, Rod. Your patience paid off.
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Carol, it is a beautiful old cathedral, some parts date back 1000 years with additions around 600 years ago, I have quite a number of internal images with older cameras but must get back there with the current Nikon D 300 to get some hopefully better new ones,
Regards, Rod.
CiaoBella
excellent architectural study, beautiful
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much, I had this composition in mind for some years, just took a while picking up the courage to lie on the cathedral floor with so many curious onlookers to capture it,
Regards, Rod.
elisab
That is one beautiful ceiling. It is so samazing when you go into a building and see such architecture all around you. The only thing you can do is just shoot it, even if yo have to lay on the floor to do it. You are a brave soul!!!
gingy
