The Sunday Special

Every Sunday a steam train makes it way down from Bristol to Kingswear filled with steam enthusiasts, mainly on the main Paddington to Penzance line.

Quite exciting to see it pass Dawlish at about 40MPH with the whistle blowing and people cheering it on it’s way along the scenic coastal section of the trip.

The Sunday Special belongs to the following groups:

  • rodsfotos replied

Many thanks Richard,as you may guess, I was on the bend of the cliff path near the shelter long before the train was due and set a fast shutter speed around 1/800 sec which proved OK on the normal trains thar passed earlier, then when this one came I frantically panned, zoomed and fired off about a dozen shots, Regards, Rod.

Just superb Rod and, like so many of your photos, it brings back wonderful memories from my previous life. I have clear recollections of The Devonian and the Cornish Riviera Express, both from travelling on them and from standing on a footbridge overlooking Teignmouth station. In those days, of course, steam was all there was, but there was still something special about watching one of these beauties racing along. Did I ever show you the painting I have of the Devonian I wonder? It’s here in RB somewhere – I’ll look it out and send you the link. My congratulations on a marvellous example of what photography is all about. All the best, Peter

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much Peter,Yes you sent me a mail some time ago with an image of the Devonian attached which I have saved to disc,it’s a beautiful painting that captures the magic of steam travel perfectly, Regards, Rod.

Rod, I love this! Somehow I had not seen this before, but it’s an instant fave for me! I love all of your shots of England (my mom is over there right now on holiday, wish I was with her!), but this one especially. Very picturesque. A beautiful image Rod, this lovely shot is timeless,it could have been taken ages ago if it was in B&W, and I’m sure it also would be great in B&W. A beautiful sight seeing that 329 engine with its smoke along the coast with the lovely colourful houses in the background. Best regards,Henri.

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you so much Henri, there is something about steam trains that brings back so many happy memories for most of us.
I have tried it in sepia but never thought of converting to B & W, I must try that to see what it looks like,

  • Sharon Mau

    Sharon Mau

I can almost hear the train whistle. It is a beautiful view! I love the colourful homes and buildings and the seawall is very nice. How thoughtful of them to include a pedestrian walkway along the water. I see stone steps leading down to the beach below. I hope they are not swept out by a big wave! How far do you need to walk to find the crossing over the railroad tracks? I love the diagonal composition. It is a beautiful image Rod and so classic!

  • rodsfotos replied

Hello Sharon, thank-you so much for the wonderful comment my friend, there is a footbridge over the railway line at the station which is immediately to the right of the image and another just a short distance to the left, so no great distance to walk to get on to the beach,
    Regards, Rod.
