(Best viewed in large format.)
The Old Town of Dubrovnik abounds with churches and monasteries. Pictured here is the dome of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, and a partial view of the impressive Jesuit Monastery at the upper right, which one can see is located adjacent to the seaward edge of the Old Town Fortress Walls.
The preceding structure of 12-14th century Romanesque style was virtually completely destroyed in the 1667 earthquake, but financed to some degree by the votive gift of the grateful King Richard the Lionheart who survived a shipwreck on the nearby island of Lokrum, pictured below, which lays a short 10 minute ferry-ride today from the Old Town.
Current excavations however have challenged the historical records that have accepted until now that Dubrovnik was established during the 7th century, when the inhabitants of Epidaurum, today known as Cavtat, fled to this narrow isthmus of land, seeing it as more readily defensible against the threat of invaders. However, recent excavations have uncovered remains of a much older structure beneath the existing site, which now turns the clock back much further, as there seems to have been a cathedral here since the 7th century, which now would suggest a well-established urban centre here even as far back as that time.
Dubrovnik Old Town is classified since 1979 as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
