I ran to the rock...but she couldn't hide me.

This is a mixed media collage. It was inspired by a song called Sinner Man by Nina Simone. In the song a sinner man is running from the devil. He runs to the rock, the river, the sea and the Lord but no one can help him. He finally runs to the Devil, who is waiting for him.

I ran to the rock...but she couldn't hide me. belongs to the following groups:

The background is mostly acrylic paint…but I also layered paper collage into the painting…like the girl is a mixture of paper from magazines…and other textures…so it’s mostly paint and paper collage…Thanks for commenting!

i ADORE this piece. i will have to come back and study it more. the area of the feet grabbed my attention. and yes, we love nina!

  • Rochele Royster replied

thank you. this piece went through quite a transformation over three years. It started out totally different…and ended up like this….through the process of this collage being created i finished grad school…got married…and quickly divorced…and moved on to marry my college sweet heart who i had lost and found…i think its about that transformation…and its interesting that the area of the feet grabbed your attention…feet symbolizing movement…roots…

ioooooh YUMMY STORY! i am happy for it. maybe i am attracted to the feet because i am attracted to movement since i have been in a time warp for a little over a year. i am sure i could learn much from you. i am mostly self taught and rather humble about my strengths. i do LOve this PiEce!
