Driving cross country, I stopped at the amazing Capitol Reef National Park in Torrey, Utah. What I love about the Southwest is how foreign much of the terrain looks compared to the green rolling mountains to which I’m accustomed. In this color photograph, a mountaintop of rock stretches above a layer of thin clouds into blue sky. The summit is composed of layers of angular red, tan, and sand colored rock. It rests upon a base of dirt, covered with fragmented rock chunks and small, scattered evergreen bushes. Below that, a cliff of of brown rock extends downward out of frame.
