Colleen found this shy fellow peeking out at her among some Common Burdock wildflowers in Lakeside, Montana (USA). I love the way the sunlight shines through the butterfly’s wings and the edges of the flowers. I’m entering this in the Winged Insects challenge, hosted by the Shutterbugs group.

Nice image! Thinking this is a SIlver-bordered Fritillary. Definately in the family. The plant, however…hmmm
Is this more like a bush or maybe small tree? The ‘flowers’ look like chestnuts to me but the leaves aren’t matching what I’m finding. Do you know what color they bloomed by chance?

  • Thanks, Carla! I know they aren’t trees because we don’t have any blooming trees in the wild here in October. The flowers are a light purple in full bloom. They look a lot like Canadian Thistle but are smaller with different leaves. I know I’ve pulled these things out of my garden before. They’re extremely hardy.

Excellent info! Helped me a lot. Check out Burdock…possibly Common Burdock? Related to the Thistle but without all the spikes. Reading up on the info…almost ALL of this plant is safely edible. Some was cultivated in Europe and Asia for it’s main root chich can be boiled and is considered extremely tasty. hmmm

  • Thanks again, Carla! I don’t know what I’d do without you.
