I found this old shed in a field next to our new home in Columbia Heights, Montana (USA). It looks like an old greenhouse, attached to the building. It feels so sad because somebody must have had big dreams for it when it was built. Unfortunately, most of the farm land around here is being sold to developers. This is the last area of the Flathead Valley that hasn’t been filled with new homes yet.

You can see Teakettle Mountain on the left and Columbia Mountain on the right in the background. At the time that I took this photo there was just a dusting of our first winter snow on top of the mountains.

Wonderful capture. While I find the abandoned house, I find that the land being sold to developpers even sadder…

  • I agree. I remember a time when we would drive across the valley and see nothing but farms. Now the Flathead Valley is listed as the fastest growing area in Montana and all we see are housing developments.

Lovely shot – I always find abandoned buildings so sad. What a shame that this beautiful area is going to be built up

  • Thanks, Shulie! I agree with you. It’s fortunate to there is more acreage in Montana that is set aside as protected land than that which is zoned for building. I can’t blame people for wanting to live where they are surrounded by beautiful nature, but the problem comes from wanting to live in communities too. It’s doesn’t bother me to see an occasional house, here and there.

this is very sad … we’re losing too much of our farmland to ‘development’ (sigh) … we can not afford that happening … what I’d like to see instead of the same old ‘development’ would be something more unique .. perhaps smaller housing with community land for farming .. self sufficient (as much as possible) communities …. take care of ourselves as local as possible … just hate to see all the beautiful land to be filled with housing ‘developments’ (sigh)

  • I agree. Shaun and I were talking and thought it would be nice if people could build their homes underground here, keeping the landscape relatively untouched. With all the technology we have now, they could make it look like the windows looked out on the landscape. The people who move up here have tons of money, so the extra cost wouldn’t hurt them.

hobbit houses would be very perfect for the area! fantastic insulation for the winter months and cooler in the summer … sadly rarely does anyone think outside the box …
