Another photo of the Meade Hotel in Bannack, Montana (USA). Originally the Beaverhead County Courthouse, this beautiful building was purchased by Dr. John Singleton Meade, in 1890, for $1,250.00. He remodeled the building, added a kitchen in the back and turned it into a fancy hotel. The Meade Hotel operated until the 1940’s.

Bannack is a ghost town that has been preserved by the Bannack Historical and Museum Association and run as part of the Montana State Park system. The discovery of gold in Grasshopper Creek in 1862 brought hundreds of miners to the area and, by spring of 1863, the town had a population of over 3,000. It became the first state capitol of Montana.

I’m entering this in the Hotels, Lodges and Inns challenge, hosted by the Your Country’s Best group.

    Another beautiful Bannack image, Kathleen.

  • Thanks, Bryan! I think I’d enjoy living in Bannack, if there were a few neighbors there. I loved the campground, but I don’t know how the last few residents hung on after the town emptied out.

Great shot, Kathleen – what a great building. Can you go inside?

  • Thanks, Shulie! We saw other people going inside the hotel, but we were rushed, trying to get to as many buildings as possible before we had to leave. Shaun and I only went inside the church and the jail. We’re hoping to spend more time there this spring.

    Beautiful capture and story.

  • Thanks, Bunny! I wish we could have spent more time there. Three day weekends are nice, but still not enough time to really look around. We didn’t even have time to stop in Virginia City. We’re hoping to go back next spring when the boys have more time.
