This is where the Northfork of the Flathead River forms the boundary between Glacier National Park (Montana, USA), on the right bank, and Great Northern Flats, on the left. The Apgar Mountains form the western edge of the Park.
This is a popular launching spot for rafters and kayakers during the summer tourist season. We normally have trouble finding a camping spot in the summer, but it was deserted this weekend. The only tourists left are mostly retirees, who take advantage of the off season prices.
This is our favorite place to camp. Even though the original campground and trees were destroyed in the Robert Fire, the Flats themselves were spared. Our sons love to fish the river here and my husband and I search the gravel bars for fossils and fire marble, which was a popular semiprecious gemstone in the 1950’s.
