Today I am thankful for the opportunity to spend some time in paradise. We camped out this weekend at Great Northern Flats, across the Northfork of the Flathead River from the western boundary of Glacier National Park, Montana (USA). After a night of thunderstorms, I awoke to this beautiful autumn mist all around us. This was taken at the northern end of the Flats (south of the campground), which was the only part of this area that was untouched by the Robert Fire of 2005. I’m not normally a fan of rainstorms, but I loved walking around in this wet landscape. It had the crisp feel of an Autumn day and the wonderful musty smell of fresh rain.

Since I was the only person at the camp who was awake this early, I felt like this scene had been created just for me. Even though grizzly and black bears have been known to frequent this area of Glacier Park, I felt completely safe and at peace. I felt closer to God here than I ever had in any church. It made me think of the Bible verse that states that all of creation sings of God’s glory.

This is part of the old road, which we used to use to access the southern part of Great Northern Flats. Unfortunately, the road has washed out into the river, where it connected to the official campground. The only way to access that part of the Flats is to hike in. Nature is already well on its way to erasing all signs of the original road. Several grasses have filled it, and some saplings have taken root, leaving only the deep ruts carved by our tires.
