This is the first ghost town I have ever visited. My husband and I have been talking about traveling to the different abandoned towns in the West for over 30 years, but we never seemed to have the time or money. Other priorities always took precedence. I am so thankful to Shaun and Ann for taking us there on their vacation! It was even more exciting than I had anticipated. Now we’re talking about going back when we can spend a few more days looking around.

This is one of the old miner’s cabins in the ghost town of Bannack (Bannack State Park), which is about an hour’s drive from Dillon, Montana. Bannack was named after the Bannock Indians, but a clerical error changed the second “a” to an “o”. It was founded in 1862 after gold was found in Willard’s Creek and became the first capitol of Montana.

Photo taken at Bannack State Park, September 5, 2011 with a Kodak EasyShare Z712 IS camera. The reddish coloring is caused by the smoke filled sky, which turned the sun red, from the complex of forest fires along the Idaho/Montana border.

Flashback! I feel like I’ve gone home again. The world of my childhood. Gorgeous capture.

  • Thank you, Bunny! You really need to take the time to come back here and visit. It would be a great opportunity for photographs.

Great shot. I love this place!!

  • Thanks, Kay! My husband and I have dreamed, for years, of visiting Bannack. It was a wonderful trip, which took us through the Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park, Virginia City and Nevada City. I only wish that we could have spent more time in each place. I don’t dream of visiting exotic countries because there is so much of Montana that I still haven’t gotten a chance to explore.

    Beautiful, hon, very nice!!

  • Thank you! I was rushing around, trying to get a few photos before I lost the sunlight, but the weird colored sky actually helped in this one.
