Artist's Description

We went camping, for the second weekend in a row, at Great Northern Flats, across the Northfork of the Flathead River from the western edge of Glacier National Park. This is a favorite launching point for rafters and kayakers. Throughout the day it is more like a parking lot. We counted 19 trucks with trailers parked along the loading ramp. Once the sun starts to go down the river clears and the vehicles depart, leaving the campground empty, except for the three camp sites.

This is my favorite time of day at the Flats. The temperature drops suddenly, and the land reverts to what it must have been like before white man arrived in the 1800’s. A black bear ventured down to the river, once all the crowds were gone. Fortunately, he was on the Glacier Park side.

Photo taken August 21, 2011 at Glacier National Park, Montana (USA), with a Kodak EasyShare Z712 IS camera. This view looks across the Flathead River toward the Apgar Mountains, which form the western border of the Park.
