This was taken in October of 2010 in one of my favorite places in Washington state (USA), the vista across the Columbia River from Vantage. I love the rugged emptiness of this place! It’s like stepping through a time machine and seeing the world before people. I remember driving through here after Mount Saint Helens erupted and the landscape looked prehistoric. I expected to see the last of the dinosaurs appearing over the ridge.
This area is part of the Columbia Plateau. The Columbia River was formed when waters broke through the ice dam of Glacial Lake Missoula, in Montana, and cut a huge gorge through the plateau.
