Shaun and his wife headed out to Spokane to visit his sister on Memorial Day weekend. They left Saturday night, after work, and took the shortcut to the interstate. The car broke down in Plains, Montana (USA), a tiny (population 1,126, area .6 square miles), but beautiful, town about 25 miles northeast of St. Regis, a stop alongside I-90 on its way west to Lolo Pass.

There were no rooms at the hotel so Shaun and Ann slept in the car. On Sunday, they found that there were no stores open to buy the parts he needed to fix the car and they couldn’t get a tow truck.

Fortunately, they got ahold of Jimmy, who bought the part in Kalispell and drove it down to Plains. Normally, this would have been a nightmare for Shaun and Ann, but Plains has always been our dream town and we never seem to have the time to stop there for more than gas and the restrooms. Shaun and Ann set out on a walking tour of the town, while waiting for Jimmy to make the two hour trip.

Plains lies on both sides of the Clarkfork River, which was flooding at the end of May. It was originally called Horse Plains, but the name was changed in 1905, when they got their own post office.

I was so excited about finally getting a load of Shaun’s photos that I spent the last two days doing the drudgery work of running them through the Topaz DeJPG filter, a wonderful plugin that erases JPG artifacts.

Photo taken by Shaun Emerson on May 29, 2011, with a Nikon Coolpix P90 camera. Contrast and levels adjustment done in Photoshop CS.
