This is a tiny one room church in Columbia Heights, which is a small community across the Flathead River from Columbia Falls, Montana. I have never seen it listed on a map. This sits in somebody’s backyard, behind their barn. I’m not sure which came first, but I suspect the church was already there when the homeowner built the house because the architecture of the church fits many of the other old churches in the Flathead Valley. The house in front was built with a European Alpine look, like it was designed for some of the rich retirees that have moved here in the last 20 years.
There are many of these small churches in the valley. Unfortunately, they haven’t been able to compete with the bigger, more prosperous churches. It’s a shame. We used to attend another church like this that was a couple of miles down the road. It had a congregation of less than 20, but I enjoyed the feeling of being part of a small, close-knit family. As the church members moved away, we ended up with only two families attending, ours and the pastor’s. The mission group that had sponsored this church decided to close it down.
