Artist's Description

2/19/12 – Featured in the GREAT PLAINS OF NORTH AMERICA Group.

Photo taken April 18, 2011 in Columbia Falls, Montana (USA), with a Kodak EasyShare Z712 IS camera.

This is another view of our typical Spring day here, on the main branch of the Flathead River, which receives the runoff from the South, Middle and North Forks. The clouds are from a snow storm. The snowflakes can only be seen in the full view.

As you can see, if the level gets much higher we’ll have flooding. The snow levels have been so high this year, the three dams in the area are having trouble getting rid of the overflow. They have been talking about using the spillway on the Kootenai dam, near Libby. The problem with doing that is that the spillway water will lower the temperature of the river, causing problems for the spawning sturgeon.
