In many ancient languages, the same word was used for “spirit”, “breath” and “wind”. Our English word, “inspiration” comes from the same root word as “respiration”. The implication is that what we breathe in gives us inspiration. In the Book of Acts, Jesus told the apostle to receive the Holy Spirit and then he breathed in (inspired). Thus, there is a connection between breath and the Spirit, who inspires us.

Whatever our spiritual beliefs may be, as artists we are usually inspired by something outside of ourselves, whether it is God or spirits or a person who encourages us or another artist, writer or musician. This is in honor of the source of our creative spirit.
