This is Ann and her mother at Shaun’s wedding in the summer of 2009. Ann’s parents flew here from Mumbai. It’s my favorite photo from the wedding as Ann is the youngest daughter, the last one to leave the nest. I felt so bad for her mom, especially, knowing that she wouldn’t be able to see her very often.

Letting go is the start of a new life for both the mother and daughter. For the daughter, it’s the start of life as an independent adult. For the mother, it’s time to explore a new future, an opportunity to do the things that had always been set aside because of other responsibilities. The tremendous loss that she feels is replaced by an exhiliration, that sense that all things are possible. It’s a feeling that we usually only attribute to youth.

Please view this in full view to see the expressions on their faces better.

Photo taken in Kalispell, Montana (USA) by Colleen Stubbert Emerson (Brian’s wife) with a Nikon CoolPix P80 camera. This was taken in natural light.
