Shaun took this photo on our recent trip to Port Townsend, Washington (USA). This fawn was in a yard, in the middle of town, along with two adults and a very young fawn. There were deer all over the place. This town is an artist community, with very few hunters living there. The deer must sense that they are safe there, especially at this time of year, with hunting season so close. In our part of Montana, I’ve known hunters who shot the deer who came on their property during hunting season.
In all the time we lived there, I never saw one deer in town. We couldn’t drive anywhere, on this trip through Port Townsend, without seeing them. There were two deer in the yard across the street from this one and the homeowner chased them off with a broom. These deer were a lovely sight, but they must be wreaking havoc on the many gardens there.
