12/28/10 – Featured in the MULTIRACIAL BEAUTY Group.

This is my experiment in creating something that is retro. I started out with an original photo of my granddaughter, Rachia, and then converted it to black and white and made it high key in Photoshop CS. I cleaned up all the stray hairs and black marks with the eraser tool.

I then selected all the black except for her mouth and nose, and made it into a new layer, which I was able to add a fractal design to that I had made in UltraFractal 5. I added layer styles of drop shadow and an outer glow gradient to give it a slight coloring.

This really looks better in full view. The detail, coloring and fractal texture don’t show up well in the preview image.

The original photo was taken with a Nikon CoolPix P80 camera. You can see it below.

Beautiful work Kathleen!! I love this!! Thanks for posting how you did this, I’m always looking for ideas and this is something I wanted to try.

  • Thank you, Tori! I’m honored that there is actually something you could learn from me.

Wonderful work, Kathleen! “View Larger” does show up a lot more of the detail – little hints of purple here and there. And your granddaughter is such a wee beauty, too!

  • Thank you very much, Mike!

p.s. She is a doll sneak a hug from me in. :)

  • Thank you, Therese! I will. It’s hard to avoid playing favorites, because she is so smart. She’s also the one who gets into everything, but I’ve always had a soft spot for children who are overly inquisitive.
