I started out trying to make a selfportrait and realized, halfway through, that this was more a portrait of every woman in my generation. This is the portrait of a woman whom the world considered a beauty when she was young, but she knew that she was raw and unfinished, the beauty only on the surface. Now that the years have taken their toll on her face and hair, she realizes that she is really a work of art in progress. Each line that appears on her face was carved by selflessness and pain. Each gray hair is achieved by a thousand experiences that gave her wisdom and compassion. The beauty of youth has been polished and changed. There are now layers and depth that conceal the girl inside but haven’t obliterated her.
I started this in UltraFractal 5 with a Julia formula and made it a collage in Photoshop CS, layering different fractals, adding filter effects and painting with the burn, eraser and smudge tools.
