This was taken in Kalispell, Montana (USA). The Burlington Railroad used to be a major employer in the Flathead Valley. I moved up here in the 1970s when my parents bought a hotel, bar and restaurant in Whitefish that catered to the railroad workers. Unfortunately, the railroad traffic has slowed since then, and they don’t employ very many people here anymore. This photo is taken at a railroad siding. A few cars still service some businesses in Kalispell, but most of the traffic goes to Whitefish and Columbia Falls, where the sawmills ship their goods.
I love the sound of the trains, especially at night. I find it comforting to hear them when we’re out camping. It’s a reminder that civilization isn’t that far away.
The cloth on the tree looks like the ones that tree surgeons used on my mom’s trees, sort of like a large bandaid to protect the trunks where they had been injured.
