This photograph was also taken in Hampi, Karnataka, an ancient city in Southern India. I was told that this kingdom was so rich, that people would sell things such as gold and pearls out in stalls here, and on the side of the roadways.

This is one of the buildings in the ruined city of Vijayanagara (City of Victory), which surrounds the modern village of Hampi. These 40 square kilometer ruins were once the capitol of the Vijayanagara Empire, located in southern India on the Deccan Plateau. Established in 1336 by Harihara I and his brother Bukka Raya I, it lasted until 1646. Because of interaction with the surrounding Islamic kingdoms, the buildings have a mixture of Islamic and Hindu architectural styles. The ruined city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known in that context as the Ruins of Hampi.

I’m entering this in the Old Buildings challenge in the Weekly Theme Challenges group.
