Hoverfly, Family: Syrphidae
This is NOT a bee, it is actually a fly, from a family of flies which mimic different kinds of bees and wasps. He landed on my sleeve, which had colors that were complimentary to those of the fly. Because they are so friendly, I was able to get my camera and take this macro without scaring him off.
I have seen far too many of these cute flies killed due to human ignorance, mistaking them for yellowjackets.
Because I’m allergic to bees, I’ve learned to spot the difference. One of the things to watch for is the way they move when flying. They hover, like a helicopter, hence the name, “hoverfly”. They also don’t make the humming or buzzing sound associated with bees.
Hoverflies are very friendly. My brothers and I loved to have them land on our arms, and watch them licking the moisture off the skin. This one is sitting on my sleeve.
In case I don’t get the time in the near future, thank-you for everyone who faves and comments on my work. I truly appreciate your support! :—)
