Made in Ultra Fractal 4. Schizophrenia is a serious illness that affects the lives of everyone around the victim of this terrible disease. For years its sufferers were stigmatized and demonized. It can be controlled with medications and counseling. This is a tribute to my son’s ex-girlfriend, who takes care of a family member with this problem.

This was an experiment in using layers in UltraFractal to do things I would normally use Photoshop for, like shadows and bevelling to simulation layer styles.

I tried to express the mind, dealing with too much sensory information and having to decide what isn’t real and filter it out.

11/26/10 – TOP TEN WINNER in the cer raz ee challenge hosted by the Artists With Bipolar/Mental Illness and Supporters group.

Wow! That’s unique and stunning. I love it.

  • Thank-you. I’ve been working on new gradients and it’s been taking an hour or two for each one, so I’ve been trying them out as soon as possible. I like the way this one turned out.

Interesting work, Is is based on a Julia set?

  • Yes. This was a very early work of mine. I hadn’t gotten the daring to step away from Julias at that time.

Even with meds it’s not so easy to determine what’s real.

  • Yes, and sometimes the meds make it difficult to determine what is real, not just for schizophrenics but for those with bipolar disorder too. It takes the doctors some time to come up with the right drug cocktail that works.

This is an incredible work and well titled! Mental illness takes such a toll and there is still some amount of stigma attached to having a mental illness. It’s no different that having any other disease. The body is a bag of electrochemicals and anything that causes an imbalance in those chemicals could be classified as a disease. People with heart disease or cancer don’t face the same type of prejudice and discrimination. Thank you for submitting this, Kathleen.
