Extremely rare and endangered. Endemic to New Zealand. Many of these are bred in captivity to try and help the species survive, to give the chicks a chance in life. In the wild they nest on the ground in burrows and are killed off by possums, wild cats, domestic cats, rats, and stoats.

The NZ Falcon is small and is often named the Sparrow Hawk. This one is female as the females are much larger. Tthey can fly at 200kmh and have sight 8x better than humans
