Wilson is a male NZ Falcon. Extremely rare and endangered. Endemic to New Zealand. To try and help the species survive, they’re trying to breed in captivity to give the chicks a chance in life. In the wild they nest on the ground in burrows and are killed off by possums, wild cats, domestic cats, rats, and stoats.

We were fortunate to have Wilson come to camera club and were able to take photos of him against the white screen.

Quite a small falcon (the females are bigger), they can fly at 200kmh and have sight 8x better than humans.

Thanks for the info. I did not know we had a native falcon in Aoteraroa. What a gorgeous looking bird, especially the little touch of yellow around the beak

  • I think they are one of hte most attractive birds in NZ. We have three types of birds of prey in NZ. The most common are the Australasian Harriers. They can be seen soaring/hovering on the hunt for birds. The NZ Falcon hunts differently – he sits in a tree until he spies his prey. He then flies very fast to get it, and takes it back to the perch, so you won’t see one soaring.

We also have one male black kite in the Marlborough region, and the only one in the country. Was most likely blown over from Australia in a storm. He’s been here about 15 years apparently.
