I found this on my windowsill the other day. It’s an Australian Swift Ground Spider.

This spider is reported to be one of the fastest in Australia. It moves in short bursts with a darting type motion.

This spider has brilliant white markings across its body, with one row of white dashed spots on the abdomen. The forelegs are reddish to brownish in colour, which can help this spider mimick a wasp’s antenna.

  • Thank you so much for allowing me to learn what it is. We have another import here of which I have a lot of them – and that is the White Tail Spider. Funnily enough a friend of mine came over here from the US, stayed for a month, then went to Australia, and there in his suitcase was a white tail which Australian customs found. It obviously wanted to go home!

moves in fast darting motions,. wow I agree with George a bit creepy but a beautiful capture you got.

  • Glad you like it, but I think spiders are beautiful and not creepy at all :) They’re only creepy when they get into your clothes :)

    apparently they have a temper

  • Really? – this one was just sitting in the sun sunning itself on my window sill! Next to my chair :)

  • Read that if you touch their heads, they’ll make you feel pain, but they won’t kill you ;)

Great shot, Robyn. I can only echo Shane’s comments on both the identification and description. These guys are really hard to photograph and you have a fantastic shot of one.

  • Thanks – it was just sunning itself on the window sill next to me. I looked for a ‘spider’ group on RB but there’s none – maybe I should start one up!
