Doucs Langur

The very Rare and Endangered Red Shanked Douc’s Langur.

Canon 20D

CRITICALLY ENDANGERED! During the Vietnam War millions of bombs were dropped in the Langur Douc’s forest home and huge swathes were defoliated with chemicals like Agent Orange, wiping out many plants and animals. Doucs were also used for target practice by soldiers and hunted for meat by subsistence hunters. Nobody knows how many Doucs survived, but it seems likely that their numbers have been devastated over big areas. They were previously observed in groups of 60 or more, now groups are rarely larger than 12.

Taken in Philadelphia Zoo

Great Shot Robyn. Wasn’t it a thrill to get this shot ??? They are awesome.

  • Robyn Carter replied

They are a thrill to capture. Unfortunately i was having difficulties with my camera in Philadelphia. It was fixed in NYC a few days later, and i hoped to see more Doucs Langurs in San Diego Zoo – alas – they ahd none. I live with the fact that this may be the only image I get of one for hte rest of my life.

They are simply awsome creatures – you are right :)

    Cheers
    Robyn

I forgot to mention the secret to a great portrait, whether human or animal, is to catch them in a natural state of inner thought or concentration. This photo shows he is in deep inner thought. Would love to know what it is thinking. Great capture.

  • Robyn Carter replied

These animals appeared to be extremely shy, and avoided all eye contact. I take this to mean they are also extremely intelligent ones. Felt sad for their plight.
