Edge of Empire!
Part of Hadrians Wall marking the Northern limit of the once mighty Roman Empire. It was built on the orders of Emperor Hadrian to establish a formal frontier after several failed attempts to invade what is now Scotland. Work began in AD122 by Legions XX VALERIA, VI VICTRIX and II AUGUSTA.
The weather forecast had promised some wonderful evening sunshine. It was wrong! I had to make do with leaden rain filled skies.
This is one of the most dramatic sections of the wall. It hugs the edge of a series of volcanic crags in a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs. You can just see milecastle 39 in the dip. Much of the stone has been incorporated into the nearby farmhouses and villages and the remains of the wall stand at roughly shoulder height.
It’s a fabulous place to visit and let your imagination soar…...........

Sir Robert !! HOW did I miss this ?????????
Wait … 9 days ago I was swamped by teenagers and incapable of getting anywhere near my PC!! – ok sorry that’s how :O)
But my daughter Gynnirox will love this! Her favourite movie is Clive Owen’s King Arthur! I can see her in another 6 years taking off with a pack on her back to go exploring and Conquering the world!! :O) This will be one place she will insist on seeing! Especially if she sees this picture [Showing her asap :O)]
I have a dream of going with her but I know I would only slow her down <) So I will live it through her – she can send me photos and postcards and I’ll read her journals.
Maybe one day I will see it for myself <)
here’s to hoping!
And I agree with Joak the moodiness of the atmosphere of such a blustery day adds to the majesty of the imperial attempt that you have captured so well. Thank you for again showing us the might of the daring of old that still remains :O)
Chookas! X♥X

Thanks ad, I’m sure you’d love it here, the atmosphere is superb…....as long as you (and/or daughter) visit early morning or late evening when it’s quiet. Just you, your imagination and the Curlews.
On weekdays rioting crocodiles of schoolchilderen are enforced to `enjoy’ it wonders by harassed teachers and at weekends it’s swamped with tourists.
