digital painting over pencil sketch. post-processing using gimp.
The line work, and some very basic light shading were done in pencil. Using gimp I then darkened the image to a medium grey, increased the contrast, then used the dodge and burn tool to do further adjustment to shading, mostly using the burn option. Then I used the smudge tool as a pseudo paint brush over the body to smooth it all out and add ‘brush strokes’ to the finished look.
I guess this was kind of a digital version of the techniques used for charcoal drawing, but I’m no expert on that.

Really nice technique and textures man.

  • thanks Matt. I did like the grittiness of the pencil work, but I’ve since whipped out the smudge tool and done it in more of a painted kind of look, and I think it’s better now. :)

    Extraordinary work of form.

  • thanks heaps Michael, I actually did the vague outline of this one a few years ago, so today when I did the shading and texture work on it I was a bit surprised it worked out ok. :)

unreal, i love all the textural feelings to this, dimply, smooth, metallic to name a few. nice work octochimp.
    ;-) xox

  • Thanks Ab. I have to admit it was very experimental in technique, so I was pleased when it worked. :)
