This painting is dedicated to our brave United States Marines, based right here in Camp Pendleton Ca, near San Clemente. Welcome home from Iraq guys. It is time for some R&R at San Onofre State Park and Beach. Trestles beach is the legendary surfing spot at the edge of the camp. It is time for Surfing, BBQ, and beer, a beachfrire, fireworks and “shmores” just what Southern California is famous for…
Note: This was actually painted for 4th of July 2011, but since our marines were closing out Iraq, I have changed the dedication to recognise the brilliant job they did there… and the celebrations in their honor continue!
I painted this on 140lb Aquarelle rag paper, using Grumbacher W/C paints and Russian Sable brushes. I used a wet on wet saturation technique a sprinkling of sea salt for the fireworks effect and drybrush where needed…
I am at heart a sailor, a sailor who loves to paint the sea, its moods and shifting colors. Also, there is a keen interest in the history of ships and the sailors that have travelled far distances or perished in a dramatic moment of action, in a sea in turmoil. This influence is evident in dramatic watercolors such as “The Gypsy
Moth IV” fully caught in the teeth of a gale off Cape Horn or “Red Flag Day” at the San Clemente Pier.
