Cabrillo Boat Works: San Pedro Ca by

A two color pen and Ink sepia wash.. A thin brush wash of Burnt Umber over Permanent Indian black pigmented ink applied with a pen.

This wooden boat yard existed for many years in the early period of San Pedro. This was when the great albacore tuna fishing fleets from 1903 and the japanese american village at Terminal Island were very much a part of life here. During the war the 3000 residents of the village were rounded up and interned in camps. This was the end of a great era and the end of the tuna fleets.

I am at heart a sailor, a sailor who loves to paint the sea, its moods and shifting colors. Also, there is a keen interest in the history of ships and the sailors that have travelled far distances or perished in a dramatic moment of action, in a sea in turmoil. This influence is evident in dramatic watercolors such as “The Gypsy
Moth IV” fully caught in the teeth of a gale off Cape Horn or “Red Flag Day” at the San Clemente Pier.
