Affinity Diptych (Oils)-

Affinity Diptych (Oils)-

This was painted with oils on a gessoed board. After working on the preliminary sketch, I found that by dividing the two hands (into two panels) added a greater symbolism to the piece. The division does not make two separate paintings, rather one half of a painting that relies on the other to be whole and complete. The original dimensions (as a whole) are 3ft. X 3ft. This work was completed in 2005.

Thanks to those who wrote. I think we all have felt separation at times, and seek feelings of love and affinity, it is rooted in all of humanity.

very beautiful and poetical work. the hands have so much life energy in them. almost a tribute to human love.

  • Robert Dye replied

Very good insight maka1967. The love expressed within the hands and the symbol of the ring makes it evident, but the coloration and how I painted it (and cut it) conveys this also. It was a hand that I loved and she is no longer in my life. So I could say it is about loving and losing… (a dichotomy) which I use a lot in concepts.

The colours and expressiveness of the hands attracted my eye on the Symbolism in Art page. Hands are so hard to draw well, I admire your ability. I cheat and trace round them before decorating them unrealistically

  • Robert Dye replied

Thanks for your comments. This is a rather large scale painting of the hands as subjects, and was derived from a small loose sketch. The reproduction and size of the painted work, allowed for large simplified shapes, and long, flowing contours. Glad to have your interest, and I hope you view a lot of my pieces. Please take good care, Peace-
