Nature's Progression Through Space and Time (Oils)-

This is a large canvas painted with oils and was completed over a period of about three months. It depicts the same figure that is progressing upward and to the right of the canvas. The figure changes in color, in my attempts to show an evolution of change from the physical/tangible world to the more spiritual and incomprehensible realm. The lighter figure is balancing with his hands the flower (Which are actually real, pressed tulip petals) that descend downward and transform into the blast from the rocket, which is near the other hand that holds a broken hourglass with the sands of time spewing out to create an entirely new universe. There is a multitude of symbols and metaphors that are related here, but overall I think there is a balance that is created between them all (as subject, and in coloration). A major idea related in the title, suggests the inevitable growth from the very essence and purity of nature into a more complex, refined, and developed state of existence. This, to me expresses many underlying mysteries and questions pertaining to the direction and technological development of human existence. I often times feel that we live in a time and place where technology precedes our own humanity. Completed in 2002.

great progression of colours and mindsets, the ” colour-inversion ” (red on blue background at the bottom and blue on red background at the top) works really well. curious about the tulips, will they keep? did you varnish them or cover them in any way, on the screen they really look like painted petals. agree with mufa, this is very impressive!

  • Robert Dye replied

Marie, thanks for the good comments. about your question, yes they are cured over with a lacquer, and I am curious myself of their longevity (it’s been almost ten years), nevertheless they convey the very principle of impermanence, which I think is fine and actually an enhancement to the overall painting.

  • Marie Magnusson replied

wow, 10 years, that is so cool! I was thinking that too, that adding flower petals that normally wilt and dry in a few days into an oil-painting that’s supposed to last for ages and ages is great symbolism, but that the meaning might get lost a bit too quickly if the petals were to crumble within a few months of creating the painting. brilliant idea.

  • Robert Dye replied

Thank you for your sincere interest. I like how, (when they were pressed) a few split, and I was enabled to arrange them in a “natural progression” of how they fall within the painting. The last petal becomes a flame and tail of the rocket… Take care, and keep in touch.

I like the bold use of colours in this and your other works. They really add to the emotional intensity of each piece.

  • Robert Dye replied

Thank you Celia, I wanted to create a balance of the reds and blues (warm and cool) within the background and the main subjects. The reds in the back have atomic structures which represent blood, and the deep blues of the background convey space, planets, and stars…
