This is a photo of me, taken by my Son at Point Wild, Elephant Island, The photo was taken at about 10pm.
This is the place where Shackleton left 22 of his men in 1916 while he set off to South Georgia Island to arrange a rescue party.
Included in the 22 men left at Point Wilde was Frank Wild the leader of the group and Frank Hurley, the person responsible for many of the iconic photographs from the early days of antarctic discovery.
As for Shackleton’s rescue mission, well that is one of the truly epic stories of maritime history and of human courage and endurance.
How these men survived 24 hours, let alone 6 months, is beyond me. I guess it was because it was back in the days of “iron men and wooden ships”
