Point Wild ~ My Avitar
Over the last month a few people have asked or commented on my avitar.
This is a photo of me, taken by my Son at Point Wild, Elephant Island, The photo was taken at about 10pm.
This is the place where Shackleton left 22 of his men in 1916 while he set off to South Georgia Island to arrange a rescue party.
Included in the 22 men left at Point Wilde was Frank Hurley the person responsible for many of the iconic photographs from the early days of antarctic discovery.
As for Shackleton’s rescue mission, well that is one of the truly epic stories of maritime history and of human courage and endurance.
How these men survived 24 hours, let alone 6 months, is beyond me. I guess it was because it was back in the days of “iron men and wooden ships“

what an amazing story! and such a wonderful picture of you. i can kind of relate but nothing that wild or adventerous. A few years ago i travelled to newfoundland and visited many places that our forebears lived including the dig where there are excavating where Sir John A. Macdonalds home used to stand. being well educated in history it had quite the emotional effect on me.
