The majority of almonds purchased in the United States are from California. In Yolo County, CA, there are approximately 13,800 acres (21.5 square miles) under almond cultivation. Almond trees are planted grove style using the available topography to its best advantage. As seen in this photograph, taken in the Dunnigan Hills of Yolo County, CA, this particular grove follows the contours of the hills providing for an interesting photograph. The trunks of the trees are painted white to prevent sunburn in an area that can top 100 degrees in the summer.
