Sunlight Gorge - Chief Joseph Scenic Highway, Park County, WY by

The 46 mile Chief Joseph Scenic Highway (Highway 296), considered to be one of the most scenic routes in Wyoming, follows a portion of the route taken Chief Joseph and his band of Nez Perce Indians in their attempted escape from the 7th U.S. Cavalry to Canada in 1877. The highway crosses Sunlight Creek via the 300 foot tall Sunlight Gorge Bridge, which is the tallest bridge in Wyoming. It is said that the name for the Sunlight Basin was given by fur trappers looking for beaver pelts who discovered this area flooded with light. Unfortunately, the valley was so remote, it was said that “the only thing that could get into the valley most of the year was sunlight”.
