Thanks. Interestingly the Pontiac car was names for the town in which it was made, which was named for a Native American Indian Chief, I believe. The canyon is within the Navajo Nation in Arizona and manages by a Navajo family. It’s near Page, AZ, USA

Fantastic!! Looks like a head wrapped in cloth to me….but then we don’t got pontiacs here….

  • rjcolby replied

Think it was supposed to be long hair blowing in the wind… But on a chrome ornament, hair and not hair is much the same. I did wonder about the car.

or a mummy unravelling…..what an amazing place!!

  • rjcolby replied

Yes, could be… Amazing and the fact that it is carved by water, and not slow water, gives you something to ponder while down there.

I love this place, my camera got drenched with sand… Your image is EXCEPTIONAL!

  • rjcolby replied

Does not take much wind to do that, and it’s nasty stuff, with quartz, so very tough on everything. But then at the right time of day it can make s sunbeam, beam…

  • Paul Vanzella

    Paul Vanzellafounder

YES, I SAW THE SUN BEAM…. amazing moment!

  • rjcolby replied

Cool. I’m hoping to get back there before long. A bit closer for me than you. Also would love to swap seasons for a bit, sometime. Maybe I’ll get lucky…

Spectacular shot! Those colours are unreal; was it taken on Mars? (lol)
    Bravo!

  • rjcolby replied

More like in Mars. Some really tight spaces there. Yes unreal in the way the bounced light changes quality with each bounce. An incredible place, and I had pity for the regular tourist with the always flash cameras. Not to beautiful that way.

I didn’t think anyone could take any pictures more beautiful than the millions already taken of Page and environs but you’ve done it, and done it in a distinctly individual way.

  • rjcolby replied

Wow, this is a cool comment. Thanks so much. The first trip so no preconceptions or expectations. You just don’t get that chance often.

  • Jacob Routzahn

    Jacob Routzahn

It does resemble the pontiac hood ornament, quite a bit actually. Did the colors turn out that way or were they toned in ps?

  • rjcolby replied

That’s pretty much as I remember them. The light is modified with each bounce into the slot by the colors of the sandstone. Some from sunlight, some from the blue sky light. The shadows take on a bit of blue when the skylight has the more direct path. Most complex colors and wide dynamic range. Tripod is needed. We want to go back for multi-exposure High Dynamic Range captures to see how that might work. We could than catch the very bright yellows higher on the walls.

  • Jacob Routzahn

    Jacob Routzahn

So did you shoot this one in HDR? I think that those being the natural colors makes it that more special of a shot. Truly an amazing shot. It makes me want to visit there so, so bad.

  • rjcolby replied

No that was a point and shoot, jpg image, so that’s were I am amazed. We just had to be very careful of the hot yellows, so some shots are trash, some ok, some very cool.

  • Everett Cook

    Everett Cook

this is an awesome image. where is it.

  • rjcolby replied

Thanks Everett. It is in Lower Antelope Canyon, just east of Page, AZ, USA. Within the Navajo Nation, and managed by a Navajo family. Upper Antelope just across the road is the same, but a different family.
It is a slot canyon obviously, and is being carved by massive amounts of water. An ideal spot for natural selection. Be aware of the weather on the mountains far away..

  • RavenSoul

    RavenSoul

I agree from what little I have seen I think it would take a long while to see it all if you could see it all = )

  • rjcolby replied

Yes that’s what I like about where I live that a lifetime cannot cover it all. But what I don’t like is being so far from so many other natural wonders. Where to be? It depends. I think weeks in Tulsa area would not cover it either, then seasons…

  • RavenSoul

    RavenSoul

Agreed there is much to see and remember there. I LOVE salt plains its near Jet. You would love that place Dick I just know it = )

  • rjcolby replied

    Sounds like patterns and textures…
I think it’s really hard to take pictures where you aren’t.
So much better to shoot where you are… But in front and behind.
