Artist's Description

Here a steam paddle wheeler has tied up to the banks on the Mississippi River at Clinton, Iowa. This steamer was an excursion cruise boat that steamed up and down the Iowa and Illinois area of the Mississippi River. The passengers were treated to fine dinning and entertainment. It’s Sunday afternoon and the Victorian age is evident in the dress of the passengers offloading, and all the local spectators and waiting people. Even the bicyclist wore coat and ties in this age of proper dress. The wagon high bridge which is gone can be seen in the background along with the train bridge which could swing open to allow the boats to pass through. The train bridge (current Union Pacific) is still there to this day 100 years later. Clinton produced more lumber than anywhere in the world those days and had more millionaires per capita. Most of the forests of the north were sawed up in Clinton.
