Wood pigeon doing a Richard Wilson impersonation? ;-)

Strange to think that from centuries ago until around the 1930s, country folk made pies out of these birds. For the not-so-well-off, pigeon pie was a well-used menu in rural areas….guess this also helped preserve peoples home-grown vegetables from being eaten by pigeons….

I don’t like pigeons, but I’m a vegetarian, so I would not get revenge by eating them! That said, I think that this is a great portrait of the feral!

  • Hello Bette, I’m also vegetarian, was just relating a bit of past social history in UK. When times were hard, especially in the 1800s, snaring pigeons for food was regular for the common folk. Yer ‘posh’ people (even today) ate venison, something which goes back to Bronze Age times!! Glad you like the pic, I couldn’t resist his condescending eye! ;-) The birds really are a pain, as they have to be shooed off so that smaller wild birds can eat at the feeders. maybe that’s why he’s looking at me like this ;-)

Nice shot but around here they are classed as vermin. They eat all out young veg. But stillare part of nature I guess. – Ted

  • I know what you mean, Ted, they are round here too and rightly so, as well as taking all the bird seed unless shooed away with a jug of water!! Thanks for the comment though, his look did remind me of comedian Richard Wilson in the sit-com series.
    Cheers,
    Dave ;-)

    Hello Dave..
I like your ‘postman’ so much
    Fine clear sharp close up
    FAV and compliments
(what a huge step mankind made since we used pigeons and now internet e-mail)

  • Hello John, thanks for the very kind comments and the fave. Yes the Homing Pigeon was used as the ‘postman’ and they were (and still are in places!) very efficient. But this chap is a feral crossbreed who sadly wouldn’t recognise a letter from a cabbage leaf, and certainly wouldn’t deliver it! The Homing Pigeons are very different, and there are some amazing stories about them.
I do so agree, the leap from pigeon post to Internet and things like ‘smart’ phones (are they really that smart??;-) is huge!!
    All the best, friend,
    Dave ;-)
