Death of the Albatross

Heaviness hangs on my heart
An albatross I cannot shake
Strangles each breath

Memories flood my mind and
I am locked in the past
I fight for sanity
Among piranhas and sharks who
Await a feeding frenzy upon my
Flesh that vultures drop in flight

Treading water is tiresome
I am drowning as time’s hands pull me back
Into an abyss I wish to visit no more

I close my eyes and beg dreams to come
But these nights, evasive sleep fills the darkness

Breath warms my back and neck
Your arms shield me from ghosts who
Haunt heavy sleepless nights

Bumps on skin from your touch
Remind me so well of life’s evolution
Lucky I was, remain and shall stay

Slain bird falls to his death
Breaking the hold on my throat
Your light fills my heart and
I thank you, once again for
Saving my life
