Carla and Coot (for Flash Fiction Challenge #24)

Carla was Coot’s woman, and he wasn’t noone ya’d ever wanna reckon with. He was a shit-kickin’, bourbon guzzlin’ sonofabitch. I don’t gotta tell ya, but that boy was madder than a mule with a mouth full of bumble bees and she was nuttier than a port-a-potty at a peanut festival, but somehow they made it work, until…

It was the tenth of July and hotter than a possum makin’ love in a wool sock. That’s when Billy Earl entered the place. He was the kinda fella ya brung home to meet ya granmaw. One look at him, and ya know he ain’t never comin’ home smellin’ like them swamps down by Gully Creek.

That was the last we’d seen of her. You’da thunk he’d fight for his woman, but now Coot just sits around blubberin’ like a damn fool, blowin’ his honker in a pair of her old knickers.
