The Mallet

I was a child prodigy
Playing Schubert’s 9th at three
Nothing I couldn’t do
And all was easily

The arts to mathematics
Nothing was taboo
And then there was my sister
Who couldn’t tie a shoe

Sitting at a table
Blew her nose upon her sleeve
More popular with boys than me
Was so hard to believe

She’s now a virtuoso
And that’s hard for me to say
But I knew it had to happen
I taught her how to play

I like the sense of space here which for me almost creates a sense of anticipation as if something might fill it at any moment. It reminds me of pieces by Hopper. For me there’s a loneliness within the beauty. I love the accompanying poem too

  • …your thoughts on open space, and the psychological effects it can have upon us is a very intriguing topic all right . I guess art does mimic life in many ways! Thanks so much Em! :))
